If you've been looking for a lake resort that feels like a real vacation without a full travel day to get there, Horseshoe Bay Resort on Lake LBJ deserves a spot on your radar. It sits in the Texas Hill Country about an hour west of Austin, on a lake that holds a constant level, which is why boaters love it. Fly into Austin, grab your rental car, and you're unpacking swimsuits before the kids finish asking if we're there yet! We spent Father's Day weekend here with our two boys, and it turned out to be one of those trips where nobody had to compromise. My husband got a surf boat with zero driving duty, the boys got an inflatable water park on the lake, and I got a balcony over the water.
The Lay of the Land: Hill Country, Highland Lakes and Lake LBJ
Horseshoe Bay is a small resort town on the south shore of Lake LBJ, roughly 58 miles from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The drive runs about an hour, and it's an easy one, with the Hill Country rolling out the windows the whole way.
Lake LBJ (officially Lake Lyndon B. Johnson) is one of the six Highland Lakes, a chain of reservoirs on the Colorado River that runs from Lake Buchanan down through Inks Lake, Lake LBJ, Lake Marble Falls, Lake Travis and Lake Austin. LBJ was created in 1950 when Wirtz Dam went in. It covers about 6,534 acres, stretches roughly 21 miles, and is fed by both the Colorado and the Llano Rivers.
Lake LBJ is a constant-level lake, which matters a lot if you're a boating family. It's a pass-through lake between the two big storage reservoirs (Buchanan upstream, Travis downstream), so water that comes in goes right back out and the level barely moves. Docks stay at the right height, and the lake has earned a reputation as one of the best water sports lakes in Texas for wakeboarding, wake surfing, tubing, jet skis and paddleboards.
Small communities like Kingsland, Granite Shoals and Sunrise Beach ring the lake, with Marble Falls a few minutes down the road as the main hub for dinner out. It's best for families who want a full resort experience and boaters who want smooth water.
Where We Stayed: The Residences at Horseshoe Bay Resort
We stayed in a 2-bedroom condo right on the resort property, and for a family of four it was the way to go. The full kitchen handled morning coffee and cereal, and the balcony was big enough for all four of us to sit outside and watch the boats go by.
The condos are part of the Residences at Horseshoe Bay Resort, and the water-view units sleep up to six with a king, a queen and a sleeper sofa, plus a washer and dryer.
What Makes It Special
A lake-view balcony that became our favorite spot for coffee in the morning and a glass of wine after the boys were down. Two bedrooms and two bathrooms, which means nobody is on a pullout and the adults get a door that closes. A full kitchen and laundry, a lifesaver when everyone's swimsuits are wet by 10am. You're on property, so the resort shuttle picks you up right outside. Notes to Keep in Mind Units are individually decorated, so your condo may not look exactly like the photos online. There's a daily resort fee on top of the room rate. It covers the pools, shuttle and activities, but budget for it.
On the Water: A Captained Surf Boat and the Splash Safari Aqua Park
The resort has its own full-service marina on the lake with Nautique wake and surf boats, Bennington pontoons (including a double-decker with a waterslide), Sea-Doos, and kayaks and paddleboards. Resort guests even get a complimentary hour of kayak or paddleboard time each day.
We rented a captained boat for half a day to take us around the lake, and it was a really nice surf boat. Having a licensed captain at the wheel was the MVP move of the whole trip. We got to play without stressing about driving on a lake we'd never been on, and my husband got to be a dad on Father's Day instead of the designated boat driver.
Then there's the Splash Safari Aqua Park, which was one of the highlights of the entire weekend for my kids. It's a big spread of inflatables floating on the lake at the Waterfront: slides, climbing walls, balance beams, and plenty of obstacles to bounce off of. The boys ran, climbed, fell in and did it all over again. It runs in 90-minute sessions during the summer season, kids need to be at least 6 years old and 42 inches tall, and it's reserved for registered resort guests and club members.
Pools and Resort Fun: The Floating Pool, Putting, Lawn Games and a Bird Show
The pools here are great, and our favorite was the Waterfront Floating Pool, which is actually floating on the lake. It's billed as the only floating pool in North America, a 70,000-gallon pool that sits right on Lake LBJ, so you're swimming in a pool while the lake laps around you. The Waterfront Bar & Grill is right there, and there are daybeds you can rent for the afternoon.
The other pools are worth a stop too. The Tower Pool by the main hotel is heated, has a separate hot tub and a kids' wading pool, and hosts DJ pool parties on summer Saturday afternoons. The Paseo Pool goes adults-only in the afternoons.
Golf is a big deal here. There are four championship courses: Slick Rock, Ram Rock and Apple Rock were all designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and are open to resort guests, and Summit Rock is a Jack Nicklaus Signature course reserved for members. Slick Rock's "Million Dollar Hole" with its 35-foot waterfall is one of the most photographed holes in Texas.
For the rest of us, the Whitewater Putting Course is the 18-hole putt putt of your dreams. It's real grass that winds past waterfalls and rose gardens, complete with bunkers and water hazards. There's lawn checkers too, plus tennis and pickleball at the Mouratoglou Tennis Center (six red clay courts, six hard courts and 14 pickleball courts).
And then the birds. The resort keeps a flock of exotic birds, 14 parrots and one flamingo at last count, including macaws, cockatoos and Amazon parrots, cared for by full-time handlers. There's a daily bird show where select birds come out and the aviculture team tells you about them, and it made me actually fall in love with exotic birds. Look for the morning "Flock Talk" and the evening "Night Squawk" on the activities schedule.
The complimentary resort shuttle ties all of this together. It picks you up at stops throughout the property (the condos, the pools, the marina, the golf courses, the restaurants), and it was easy to use.
Jungle Kids Club and Date Night in Marble Falls
The property has the best kids club we've come across. The Jungle Kids Club has a two-story indoor jungle gym with a tunnel slide and a real rock climbing wall. My boys usually tolerate a kids club so we can sneak out. This one they wanted to go back to! The climbing gym is literally the biggest I've seen, and the rock wall sealed the deal.
They run a Kids Night Out program in the evenings Wednesday through Sunday with crafts, games and s'mores, and you need to reserve it at least 24 hours in advance. My kids did one night so we could have a date night in town, and it's worth booking when you book your trip. They even wanted to go back the second night but we couldn't get in since we didn't book it in advance!
For our date night we drove into Marble Falls, about 15 minutes from the resort, to Cuvée Wine & Piano Bar on Main Street in Old Oak Square. The live piano (Friday and Saturday nights) was incredible, and the wine list is huge. Dinner is flatbreads, charcuterie and tapas plates. Marble Falls itself is a charming little Hill Country town with a walkable Main Street, so leave time to wander around.
Where to Eat at Horseshoe Bay Resort
Food and drink options on property were all great, and there's enough variety that we never needed to leave except for date night. J's Restaurant & Bar is the casual Hill Country spot for breakfast and lunch, with a happy hour that's easy to do with kids in tow. Waterfront Bar & Grill is lakeside next to the floating pool, does fresh seafood and from-scratch dishes with Southern and Mexican flavors, and has seating on the water with the boats going by. Whitewater 360 Sports Club is the sports bar, with 16 TVs, pizza, wings and a s'mores skillet for dessert. Cap Rock is the award-winning clubhouse with floor-to-ceiling windows and a terrace with 20-mile views over the lake and the ridgelines. It's open to resort golfers for breakfast and lunch and is members only at dinner. The Yacht Club is the fine-dining option and is reserved for club members, so ask when you book whether it's available to you. Café Del Sol (poolside burgers and frozen drinks), Mingo's Café (quick pizza and salads near the putting course) and The Market (Starbucks coffee, pastries and grab-and-go) cover the in-between meals.
Tips for Planning Your Family Trip to Horseshoe Bay
Fly into Austin and rent a car. The drive is about an hour, and rideshares back to the airport from Horseshoe Bay are hit or miss. Book your condo through me, and book early for summer holiday weekends like Father's Day and the 4th of July. I can help you Reserve a captained boat and Kids Night Out ahead of time. Both fill up on weekends, and the kids club needs a day's notice. Do the Aqua Park in the morning before the Texas heat peaks. It runs roughly Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Pack water shoes and rash guards for the Aqua Park, a hat for the putting course, and one nice outfit for date night. Check the bird show schedule at the activities desk on day one so you don't miss it. June is warm, so expect pool and lake days. Spring and fall are gorgeous in the Hill Country too, but the floating pool and Aqua Park are summer season.
Make Horseshoe Bay Your Next Lake Escape
Horseshoe Bay Resort is one of the rare places where the lake, the pools, the golf and the kids' stuff all sit on one property, with the shuttle running between them. It's an easy hour from a major airport, and with a constant-level lake for water sports and Marble Falls close by for date night, the weekend works for every single person in the car.
Father's Day was the perfect excuse for us, but this trip would be just as good any long weekend from late spring through early fall. This is why we lake.
