The Best Boat-Friendly Lakes in the Midwest

If youโ€™re a boater, the Midwest should be at the top of your list for your next lake getaway. This region is home to some of the most beautiful lakes in the country, it has the perfect combination of water fun and quiet natural beauty. From fishing and wake boarding to leisurely cruises, thereโ€™s no shortage of ways to get your boat on the water.

So, whether youโ€™re a seasoned captain or a novice sailor, grab your sunscreen, life jacket, and boat shoes! Hereโ€™s your guide to the best boat-friendly lakes in the Midwest where you can enjoy endless days on the water.

1. Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri

Why Itโ€™s Great for Boaters:

Letโ€™s start with the one and only Lake of the Ozarksโ€”a lake thatโ€™s practically made for boating. With over 1,100 miles of shoreline, this lake has plenty of space for boating activities, whether youโ€™re into high-speed thrills or more relaxed cruising. Itโ€™s a favorite for both locals and tourists, making it one of the most popular boating destinations in the Midwest. (Plus it has a spot in my heart as one of my families top lakes to visit)

What You Can Do Here:

  • Wake boarding & Water Skiing: The wide-open coves and long stretches of water are perfect for these water sports. Just keep in mind, due to the size and crowd this lake draws, if water sports is your top priority, I recommend staying at Mile Marker 40 or higher or else the safety because of all the bigger boat waves may be compromised.
  • Pontoon Rentals: If youโ€™re not bringing your own boat, donโ€™t worry! Rentals are widely available on this lake, so you can cruise at your leisure with a few cold drinks and snacks.
  • Fishing: The lake is full of bass, crappie, and catfish. Whether youโ€™re on a powerboat or a kayak, casting a line here is a must.

Where to Stay:

  • Old Kinderhook Resort: This beautiful resort community has everything from lake access and a full-service marina to an award-winning golf course and lodge accommodations. Perfect for boaters who want luxury with a laid-back vibe.
  • Margaritaville Lake Resort: Great for families, its a fun-filled atmosphere with plenty of activities for everyone.

Pro Tip: Lake of the Ozarks is famous for its annual Lake of the Ozarks Shootoutโ€”the largest amateur boat race in the Midwest. If youโ€™re lucky enough to be there in August, donโ€™t miss the excitement!
