Exploring Hot Springs, Arkansas: A Perfect Family Getaway with Lake Catherine, Lake Ouachita, and Lake Hamilton
If youโre looking for a fun Midwest family getaway with just the right mix of adventure and relaxation, Hot Springs, Arkansas is calling your name. This cute town located in the Ouachita Mountains is home to lots of lakes, beautiful parks, and plenty of fun activities. We had an amazing time exploring three of the areaโs most popular lake spots: Lake Catherine State Park, Lake Ouachita, and Lake Hamilton. Each has its own vibe, but they all deliver when it comes to having fun outdoors. Whether youโre horseback riding, boating, or just enjoying some good food, Hot Springs has you covered.

Lake Catherine State Park: A Perfect Family Spot
We started our adventure at Lake Catherine State Park, and let me tell you, it was an absolute gem. The park is the perfect place to relax and enjoy some quality family time. The vibe here is super chill, and thereโs plenty to keep everyone entertained.
One of the highlights was horseback riding with the kids. It was such a fun way to explore the park, especially with the quiet trails that wind through the woods of the state park. The kids absolutely loved it (even if they were a bit nervous at first), and we all agreed it was one of those memorable experiences you donโt get to do every day.
After our ride, we checked out the small beach area, where the kids had fun splashing around in the water. If youโre looking to stay the night, the campground is pretty awesome too. There are tons of well-maintained campsites with beautiful views, plus a yurt you can rent if you want a slightly glamping-style experience. Honestly, I canโt get over how peaceful it was here, it felt like a hidden oasis.
Lake Ouachita: Adventure and Unmatched Beauty
Next up was Lake Ouachita, and wow, what a difference it is from Lake Catherine. If youโre looking for adventure, this is the place to be. Lake Ouachita is huge. Like, 40,000 acres huge. Itโs perfect for all kinds of water sports, and trust me, we took full advantage of it.
We did have some fun on land nearby with some off-roading at the Ouachita 4×4 Offroad Park. The trails are rugged and bumpy, and we all loved the thrill and the amazing views. Itโs the perfect way to get your adrenaline pumping while taking in the beautiful scenery. If youโre into off-roading, this place is a must-do and brings in people from all over the country who are into the sport.
After our ATV adventure, we hit the lake, and let me tell you, Lake Ouachita has it all. Skiing, surfing, pontoons, you name it. Thereโs even a ton of houseboats floating around if you want to spend a whole weekend out on the water. Itโs one of those lakes where you can find your own little slice of paradise, whether itโs on a little secluded island or anchored along the shoreline. We stopped at a few islands to hang out and let the kids swim, and it honestly felt like we were on our own private getaway. People bring all kinds of gear, set up camp, and even watch Razorbacks football on the water with their friends. Itโs the kind of laid-back, lakeside vibe you just canโt beat.
And can we talk about the shoreline for a second? Itโs untouched. No houses or developments in sight, just miles of gorgeous, perfect wilderness. Itโs the kind of place that makes you want to slow down, breathe in the fresh air, and forget about everything for a while.
Lake Hamilton: The Lively, Party-Friendly Lake
After all that adventure, we rounded out our explorations at Lake Hamilton, which is kind of the complete opposite of Ouachita but in the best possible way. If Lake Ouachita is all about the outdoorsy adventure, Lake Hamilton is more about the fun, social scene. Itโs the busiest of the three lakes, with plenty of houses and vacation rentals along the shores, so it definitely has more of a โparty lakeโ vibe. You can find places to stay directly on the water at Lake Hamilton if that is what you are after for your accommodations.
We didnโt get out on the water here, but we did grab lunch at Fishermanโs Wharf, which was the perfect spot to eat. Right on the lake with amazing views, we sat on the deck and it was a great place to relax and enjoy some delicious seafood. The food was great, and the atmosphere made it feel like we were really living the lake life.
What I loved about Lake Hamilton is that itโs super convenient if youโre staying in Hot Springs. Youโve got easy access to all sorts of lake activities, from boat rentals to jet skis, and thereโs always something happening around the lake. Plus, the houses along the shoreline give the area a vacation-town feel. If youโre in the mood to rent a boat and cruise around or just chill with some friends and family, this is the place to do it.
Hot Springs National Park: A Relaxing Bonus
In between all the lake adventures, we made sure to check out Hot Springs National Park, which is right in the heart of the city. If youโre into history and relaxation, this is a must-see. The park is famous for its hot springs, and there are plenty of spots where you can visit the therapeutic waters. Itโs a great way to unwind after a day of hiking, boating, or off-roading.
The park also has some cool hiking trails and scenic viewpoints, so if youโre in the mood to stretch your legs, itโs a perfect spot. We didnโt have a ton of time to explore the entire park, but we did make a stop at the historic bathhouses. Even if you donโt plan on taking a bath, just walking through the area and learning about the history of the springs is pretty fascinating.
